2014 Killam Teaching Prize and Department Teaching Award given to Elizabeth Conibear

Dr. Elizabeth Conibear is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Genetics. She led the restructuring of the Medical Genetics 420 course to enhance student engagement, and is consistently praised for promoting an open and active learning environment, for her creative use of multimedia approaches, and for her commitment to graduate mentorship. She has participated in international outreach programs in Africa and South America designed to model good teaching practices and provide resources to local educators. These experiences have brought recognition and prestige to UBC, and have informed her own pedagogical paradigm to the ultimate benefit of her students.

Dr. Conibear can now add two new accolades to her impressive CV, having received a 2014 Killiam Teaching Prize and a Department Teaching Award.

Killam Teaching Prize recipients are nominated by students, colleagues, and alumni in recognition of teaching excellence. Dr. Conibear is the Department of Medical Genetics’ sixth recipient of the award, following Drs. Sylvie Langlois (2003), Wendy Robinson (2007), Carolyn Brown (2008), Jan Friedman (2010), and Wyeth Wasserman (2013) in a tradition of outstanding instruction.

The Medical Genetics Department Teaching Award is an annual intradepartmental award. In early September of each year, an e-mail is sent to department members calling for nominations for the Department of Medical Genetics Teaching Award. The Teaching Awards Committee meets in October to determine the award recipient. The Award recipient is announced at the Department’s Annual Research Day held in November of each year.

Congratulations!
