The Department of Medical Genetics, within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute (BCCHRI) invite applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE) faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor, tenure track or tenure, dependent on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. The successful applicant will also hold a concurrent appointment as an Investigator within the BCCHRI.
The UBC Department of Medical Genetics is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in basic and clinical research for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of genetic diseases. The BCCHRI is the largest research institute of its kind in Western Canada, where more than 300 Investigators form a dynamic and highly collaborative research community that aims to improve the health of children and their families. The successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with a large and diverse community of basic scientists and clinicians.
UBC’s Genetic Counselling Program is an established leader in the training of genetic counsellors, and is emerging as a leader on the international stage in the domain of genetic counsellor-driven research. We are seeking an academic Genetic Counsellor with expertise and experience to further the development of the genetic counselling profession as an academic discipline, improve the evidence base for genetic counselling practice in the era of genomic medicine, and to guide the vision and curriculum development required to propel UBC’s Genetic Counselling Program to promote innovative practice models with the aim to improve the health of Canadians as it pertains to genetic counselling.
Candidates for this position must hold a MSc degree in genetic counseling, as well as a PhD in a related discipline. The incumbent will show demonstrated excellence in teaching and will be expected to participate in the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate teaching activities of the Department of Medical Genetics. In addition, the incumbent will have demonstrated excellence in research in the area of genetic counselling and a demonstrated understanding of genetics, genomics and genetic counselling. The candidate will have an established research program and a history of funding as a principal investigator at the national level for their genetic counselling research. In addition, demonstrated experience in program development is highly desirable; the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the development of a PhD program in Genetic Counseling for UBC. As a faculty member in the Department of Medical Genetics and an Investigator at the BCCHRI, it is expected that the successful candidate will continue to maintain a strong, externally-funded and internationally-competitive research program, supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, collaborate with other faculty members, actively participate in service to the Department, Research Institute, University, and the academic/scientific community.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
