The Department of Medical Genetics at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the BC Children Hospital Research Institute (BCCHRI) invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful applicant will also hold a concurrent appointment as an Investigator within the BCCHRI.
The UBC Department of Medical Genetics is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in basic and clinical research for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of genetic diseases. The BCCHRI is the largest research institute of its kind in Western Canada, where more than 300 Investigators form a dynamic and highly collaborative research community that aims to improve the health of children and their families. The successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with a large and diverse community of basic scientists and clinicians.
We are seeking an epidemiologist with expertise in the use of linked administrative databases and the ability to understand and integrate (epi)genetic data in conducting research with child health populations. This role has the objective of improving the care of children with chronic illnesses and understanding the root causes of children’s chronic diseases as they relate to the interaction of genes and the environment. In conjunction with the BC SUPPORT (Support for People and Patient-Oriented Research and Trials) unit, the successful candidate will develop a large scale implementation plan for high-dimensional (epi)genomic data, and the analysis of such data in the context of linked databases.
Candidates for this position must hold a PhD or MD/PhD degree, awarded within the past 10 years, or equivalent, with postdoctoral research experience. The incumbent will have demonstrated their ability to achieve excellence in teaching and research in the area of epidemiology/population science and a demonstrated understanding of genetics, genomics and epigenomics data. Experience with collecting and integrating genomics/genetics data and population-based research data to address health disparities in children is highly desirable. As a faculty member in the Department of Medical Genetics and an Investigator at the BCCHRI, the successful applicant will be expected to develop a strong, externally-funded and internationally-competitive research program that develops genomic and epigenomic technologies and integrated analyses for population-based studies, supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, collaborate with other faculty members, actively participate in service to the Department, Research Institute, University, and academic/scientific community, and effectively teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their field of expertise.
