Dorothy Shaw appointed to the Order of Canada

Dorothy Shaw, Vice President, Medical Affairs of BC Women’s Hospital and Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology is among five B.C. residents appointed as Officer to the Order of Canada. Dr. Shaw was appointed for her significant contributions internationally. She is recognized for her publications and advocacy efforts to advance women’s rights and improve the health of women, newborns, and children. Her past accomplishments include being named as Canada’s spokesperson for the G8/G20 by the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health in 2010. She was the Executive Producer for an award-winning documentary “The Cutting Tradition: Insights into FGM” in 2009. In 2010 she was invited to be the inaugural chair of the Canadian Network for Maternal Newborn Child Health.

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, announced today 113 new appointments to the Order of Canada this year. The new appointees include 1 Companion (C.C.), 27 Officers (O.C.) and 85 Members (C.M.). These appointments were made on the recommendation of the Advisory Council for the Order of Canada.

Recipients will be invited to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a later date.
