The Department of Medical Genetics invites applications for a part-time (0.33 FTE) Sessional Lecturer to teach the following course in the Department’s MSc Genetic Counselling Program.

MEDG 550 (6 credits course)
Concepts in Clinical Genetics for Genetic Counselling
Winter 2025/2026, Term 1 and Term 2
September 1, 2025 to Apr 30, 2026

Course Description
This course is delivered primarily in person, with some content delivered virtually and/or through a hybrid approach. The course provides foundational knowledge on topics relevant to the clinical practice of genetic counselling, e.g. risk calculation, prenatal diagnosis, cancer genetics, etc. This course provides students with knowledge, skills and resources to both dig deeper into covered topics and to approach new topic areas.

The course is designed to equip first year genetic counselling students with knowledge, skills and attitudes to:
• Apply knowledge of medical and clinical genetics to patient care
• Demonstrate competency in principles and practice of evidence based human genetics and genomics
• Recognize gaps and challenges in providing person-centered, evidence-based care for underserved and underrepresented populations.

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Co-Director Curriculum, the incumbent will be responsible for planning and coordinating two 2-hour lectures per week. The incumbent will be responsible to teach in areas of expertise, and coordinate guest lecturers as necessary.

The incumbent will be:
– Fostering an environment conducive to learning
– Updating the course syllabus in response to feedback while ensuring content remains relevant, aligned with program learning competencies and accreditation standards
– Publishing the syllabus and related learning materials in Canvas
– Coordinating the materials for class discussion
– Developing and grading all student assessments
– Coordinating guest speakers as relevant
– Accessing student information systems and learning systems such as Canvas
– Providing timely evaluation and feedback to students
– Notifying Co-Director Curriculum of any concerns related to student performance

Qualifications and Skills

  • MSc degree in Genetic Counselling
  • Training/coursework in group facilitation, teaching and learner evaluation
  • Training/coursework related to principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and justice
  • Demonstrated experience teaching didactic and seminar style classes
  • Recent clinical genetic counselling experience
  • Experience with in-person, virtual, hybrid and flipped classroom style teaching

Salary
Based on Sessional Lecturer’s salary scale as per the UBCFA Collective Agreement.
$3,186.37 per credit x 6 credits = Total $19,118.22 for the position (Sept 1, 2025 – Apr 30, 2026)
