Student / Supervisor Roles

Being a member of the Medical Genetics Graduate Program requires a serious commitment on the part of both the student and the research supervisor. New students are urged to discuss this commitment and associated responsibilities with their supervisor(s) prior to entering the program or soon thereafter.

Students and faculty should read the Handbook of Graduate Supervision at UBC. It is also available from the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

The University of British Columbia Policy 85 stipulates that all research students receive a written description of their working conditions and sign a letter at the outset of their tenure. Please take a look at a Sample Letter to an incoming graduate student regarding student/supervisor expectations. In addition, the Faculty of Medicine has policies which must be followed for graduate students in an industry-supported environment.

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies holds a variety of programs to assist graduate students through its Graduate Pathways to Success program.
